Dear Folks,
now that Christmas and New Year's Eve are again just around the corner, you may ask what Guesty is planning to do this year.
Well, actually he wanted to do ... nothing. Just lazing around, watching kitschy X-mas movies and stuffing himself with gingerbread and cinnamon cookies.
But yesterday we got an urgent letter from Rudolph (maybe you remember that last year Guesty celebrated Christmas with the red-nosed reindeer, and he even was allowed to help pulling the sledge).
To cut a long story short, Rudolph is down with the flu, got it from his reindeer chum Donner, and his red nose just won't stop running. That's why Guesty will have to be running - to Lapland - to pull the sledge, you know? Otherwise there won't be presents this year :- (
So, on Tuesday Guesty will pack his bags to head for the icy North. This little bulky book ... always involved in adventures. Me, on the other hand, I'll spent the holidays with my family as usual - but for sure this will be nice as well :- )
And Guesty has promised to throw down snow and nuts and chocolate gingerbread men for us when flying above our heads on Christmas Eve. Don't you promise too much, little bulky book! I'm sure you will eat all that sweet stuff yourself ;- )
Anyway, we wish you a cosy Christmas time and a beautiful, dazzling new year 2009! We'll be back for you on 7 January. Take care and don't you drink too much eggnog :- D
Insa :- ) and Guesty :o )

beste cornellia funke,
*** Dear Layla, unfortunately I do not speak Dutch, but I got your question. So I hope you'll understand my answer in English:
The third part of the Ink trilogy is called "Inkdeath" (German title: Tintentod). It came out in Germany last autumn. Unfortunately we do not know yet when the third part will be published in the Netherlands, but I'm quite sure that it will be translated soon. Warmest wishes from Germany! Hi people! I'm taking a quick break from my cousins to write this.
Jessy:
P.E. stands for Physical Education. It involves a lot of running and sports and athletic stuff. Deoderent is stuff you put in your armpits to keep you from sweating. A towel is a soft cloth to wipe your hands, feet, or other parts of your body on. Oh yeah, I get up at 5:45 to leave an hour later. I have a friend who gets up at 5:15! She has to ride to school with some crazy senior (don't worry, he's nice even though he's crazy). I got to go to the barn on Thursday! School went only a half-day (12:00), so I went straight to the barn. A girl from Ecuador was there! She has actually been to the U.S. before and can speak fluent Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French, I think. Daniella (the girl from Ecuador) is staying with a woman who rides at my barn and has her own horse. I actually taught Daniella how to steer a horse, which was weird since she's older than I am!
The Black Hood:
Ooooh, that sounds cool! I hope you do it, that's a great idea.
Ok, I know I've asked this before, but is ANYONE upset about the "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" being set back from a November release date to a July release date? Just wondering.
That's it for now. Bye! |

I'm back!!! And I have no idea what's been going on, so please fill me in if you like.... And guess what! I'm now a weekly columnist! Its quite tough actually, come to think about it, but its wicked fun!
I also got another great idea! I'm going to walk to school one day! even thought I am... umm at least a 3 hour walk away... actually... probably more... I have a fealing im being unrealistic, but I want to try anyway! I'm going to try to do it as a fundraiser, and raise money for my school... the money will go towards buying renewable energy for the school, so that they save on power, and can buy other stuff... (easyer to get donations that way, and it actually is a lot better in the long run) I also want to get TONS of people doing it... And I'll film it I think too... Good idea? lol i got the idea when I told my dad that I didn't want to ride in the tractor with him, because I wanted to get to the other end of the field by my own means, (pick blackberries along the way) and then I got the idea that I should get to school that way... once at least... Oh... and today I found an iced tea can underwater, but then it floated away when i emptyed it XD
Anyway, write back later... |

Hi! Here I am^^
I hate school. It’s so busy … =((( First week and so much homework.
Getting up at 6am ;)
Who’s/What’s P.E.?
I’m 14, too =)
“… to bring a towel and deodorant”? What’s that? ^^ What did you do with these things?
Some of my teachers are doctors. But we don’t call them “Doctor …” even if they told us to do it. We call them “Mister …” ^^
Oh, yeah, right, you mostly have in the USA every day the same classes, right? In Germany it’s different; we have every day of the week different subjects (with the same class). It’s cool, but sometimes it’s like you said: Bad/Hard subjects on one day -.-
Hope you had luck with your P.E. …
Insa:
You’re sure? ‘Cause I mean the English one. Not the german. The English plural of “Umlaut” …
Bye!!!
*** Oh, sorry. I got that wrong. Well, I have no idea. I've only found the singular. Maybe you could say "mutated vowels"? *** |

Olivia,
No problem, I hope you enjoy them. If you like them, you might also enjoy another series by the same author called Winds Of The Forelands, the first book is called Rules Of Acsention, then Seeds Of Betrayal, then Bonds of Vengeance, Shapers of Darkness, and the last one is called Weavers of War. There is a second series after that, a continued storyline, called Blood Of The Southlands, the first book is titled The Sorcerers Plague. I figure this will keep you busy for a while. By the way the second book in the LonTobyn Chronicles is a bit slow but you have to read it to understand the third book.
Dani,
Yeah he went to the Dr. He's getting the results today, I hope it's good news, I don't think I could stand it if we lost him too.

Hi everyone! I haven't had time to write with high school, homework, cousins, and getting up at 5:45 in the morning. I LOVE high school (except P.E.)! Our English teacher is really funny, only his sense of humor is dry, so it's a little hard to tell whether he's being serious or funny. Oh yeah, one of the teachers, Mrs. Bacon (I don't have her for classes), had a baby boy over the weekend. It was announced during my Geometry class and some of the sophomores started joking about calling the baby "Bacon Bit". And one of my friends said they should've named him Chris P. Bacon. I kid you not!
Dustfinger2.0:
I've been reading a series of books (dunno what they're called) by Donita K. Paul. Don't read them if you're not religious, though, because they're allegories (they have a deeper meaning). The first book is called "Dragonspell". If you're a girl, I'd recommend Tamora Pierce. Her writing is aimed towards girls. Hope that helps!
Oh, is anyone else angry about the release date of the "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" movie? They changed it to JULY 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!! How could they?! I'd like to hear someone else's views on this.
See ya soon,
Ellen

I also wanted to ask is the premiere for Inkheart going to be 2008 or 2009? I know these things chnage often and i can never quite keep up!
Also i just wanted to ask (im not sure if it has been asked before) but if you have heard of the Twilight series? the film is going to be out in November, they are truly amazing, but a completely different style and genre to Inkheart. And are YA fantasy fiction. Also does Cornelia read in German or English, or does she not mind?

Dear Cornelia,
My sister works at a local library and had a wonderful co-worker lend an advance copy of Inkdeath to her for a couple of weeks. My sister brought it home, handed it to me, and said: "Have at it." with a smile on her face. And then I disappeared behind the cover of the book and didn't come out for about five days. I know I can't leak any info about it, but I will say that my whole self was shining for days after reading it! The conclusion to your trilogy is absolutely stunning...I wish that I too were and inkweaver, so that I might say how much your book meant and still means to me. Thank you so much for writing the Inkheart Trilogy! |

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR BOOKS INKHEART, AND INKSPELL. I also can't wait to read Inkdeath. I'm super excited to watch Inkheart the movie I'm just not sure where i can watch it yet. Also, I have thought about becoming a writer but have never really finished any story I have started to write. I have tried but soon would get bored with the story. Is there any way you can give me advice or tell me about when you were writing your books. Did you ever have trouble when you were writing? I'm not sure if these questions have been answered on this website but I would love to hear from you.

YES!!! I did it!!! OMG!!!
You may be wondering what this is about, well, its about the fact that I just sent in an article to my local newspaper (The Sherbrooke Record) and they actually liked it! in fact, they want me to send in more! which I can do, when I edit them! YES!!! Finally!!!
@ Scourge: Happy birthday! I'm actually a bit nevous about turning 16 (on the 16th of april!), as it means you get to drive, and im excited as well, but a bit nervous that I'll crash into something.
@ Bec: :-s did you know that your brain uses at least 25% of your energy? therefore "learning" is taking up precious starving energy! (I'll bring this point up to my teachers :) )
@ Everyone: the article in question is this:
Just Ask
Cancer. It seams to be popping up everywhere. Behind the fridge, between the floorboards; even on Slow Joe Crow's Nose. But what can be so evil as to cause something so destructive, deadly, and dangerously displeasing in the first place?
Now I'm certain that brain cancer is caused by hairdryer use, (as they use twice as much power as a microwave) other types of cancers depend highly on the positioning of you in relation to your radioactive mini-cooker. But kitchen appliances can't account for all of them. No! There has to be another culprit!
Now I did a little research, which is to say that for no reason at all, the image of Omega 3 Eggs popped into my head. Nothing special about that right? it's only eggs right? Eggs have been around since well... since before the chicken... or after, depending on opinion, but what about this Omega stuff? How do they get it into the chicken eggs? I highly doubt that the egg factories inject the vitamin / potential suspect of cancer causingness through syringes. Genetically modified grain anyone? Sounds plausible I guess. It was then that I realised that it was highly unlikely that I manage to convince anyone to stop eating these eggs over a groundless theory, and moved on to the more pressing issue.
I have seen vitamin supplements of Omega 3, 6, and 9, but what gives? Whatever happened to the ones in between? 1-2-4-5-7-8? Aren't they important too? And if they aren't, why didn't those scientist just give the important ones numbers 1, 2, and 3 to avoid confusion? Is Omega 6 twice as good as Omega 3? Is there an Omega 12 to be twice as good as Omega 6? But that can't be because the people at the egg factories would be putting Omega 9, or 12 in it, as it is much better than the usual Omega. But then there's the ultimate question: What the heck does it do? Most people have no idea as to what purpose most vitamins fulfil, and that isn't very good incentive to get some. Such as niacin, vitamin B7356 (there are so many vitamin B's that it's safe to assume this one exists), and of course, the elusive and mind-boggling, Riboflavin.
What is the meaning for all these odd names? Why such secrecy? Are they actually a slow acting poison developed by the government to kill us all by what would appear to be “natural” causes? I'm determined to call Health Canada and bring up this rather important issue. I'm also quite sure that they'll just say something along the lines of “It's just like that because.” and then completely avoid the question, say that it isn't important, then put me on hold with some kind of boring music that people accustomed to putting other people on hold usually play. In fact these uncooperative (and sometimes overcooperative) operators are the cause of 97.3% of cancer cases in young people (says Dr. R. Aldridge, from the Canadian institute of Cancerologists) , especially that really frustrating kind, Leukaemia, that isn't just in one organ, but insists on inhabiting your entire body, and rudely refusing to pay the rent every month.
I fully agree with Dr. Aldridge and all those other cancerologists, as it does seam to me as rather unhealthy to constantly be answered by crude because's and that's just the way it is . Every time you ask a question along the lines of “Why do some restaurants give you 2 forks when you only use one?” or “Why does the green paint section of the SICO website only display yellows?” and you're answered with that same excuse for an answer, experts have proven that you may develop extreme frustration, which may lead to mental ulcers that can't help themselves but to act as realtors for any immigrating Leukaemians
So dear reader, here's my advice to you: use those toll free numbers on every occasion possible. You'll go to bed a smarter Canadian, and who knows, it may just save your life.
Hope you liked it! |

It's finally gotten cooler! Cooler being around eighty degrees where I live. That may sound pretty warm to some, but comparing it to how hot is has been, eighty is almost cold. I feel so much better when I wake up in the morning and the weather is actually pleasant. I feel like I've just gotten permission to be happy again (hot weather has a way of doing that to me).
On the subject of temperature, Insa, how cool is it over in Germany? And is your sister rooting for Germany or The United States in the Olympics? (I don't want to start any conflict between anyone, I just was wondering at the moment).
I hope that everyone reading this is blessed with a good day today and for the rest of the coming week.

FINALLY! He isn't playing his game!!! (my dad bought this game some time in the last weeks, and was playing it nonstop because it was raining. and what annoyed me the most is that he spent 4 days trying to update the stupid thing! AHHH!!! and i rather don't like using the computer upstairs because it's slower and i just find that the house is too quiet up there...
anyway, today i saw a applebounglebanglebeast... well not really, but that was what i was going to tell any hikers i might encounter in the woods... I was going to tell them about this strange creature (with a weird accent of course) and how it rips out your organs, takes a little bite, and sows them back in to keep you alive.
unfortunately, I didn't see any hikers. I just now thought that chances are, they'd be french, so the whole plan would be in vain... damn. (althogh im fluent, I'm not very convincing in french (unless im speaking english with a french accent and adding in french words at random))
I can't believe i hadnt thought of that! I wonder if anyone would be gullable enought to believe it existed though?
@Bec: I wanted to do the 40 hour famine last year (although it may be 30 hours where I am) but I had no idea where to sign up. in my case you get to sleep in the school and you watch movies and stuff and basically do nothing all day (and seing as its on a school day (in my case) you can be excused for all sorts of things you may want to do in class because of hunger (although most teachers probably wouldnt buy it at all! OK, there's NO WAY they'd buy it! So dont try it! Especially considering that at the time that your in classes youve only missed breakfast, and maybe just had a late lunch. and some people dont even get that... (ok most do, but there have been ocasions that ive skipped lunch till later because I was really busy doing stuff that according to some people (certain teachers that would catch me comming in late) probably isnt important, but that really is for the benefit of a lot of people.
Anyway, i have to go, my sister has to find out if her horseback riding lessons are cancelled (by the way, what have I missed?) |

| I love your books! I'm so excited about Inkdeath and Inkheart the movie! You are one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to see what else you write. I think the way you write is great and there is nothing that is questionable or a bad influence on kids in your books. I hope you like writing books because I really like what you write! |

Whenever the subject of Meggie and Farid come up the answer is always "There will be another boy" I'm dying to know who he is. Could you at least give out his name? Thanks.
*** In the German edition he is called Dorian, but I don't know if his name will be changed for the English translation. *** |

Urgh . . . I'm starting high school next Monday . . . went and put my books in my new locker yesterday . . . my backpack will break before the year's up with the weight of my books . . . you should see my literature book, it's about as thick as an average dictionary!!!!!!!!!! Oh, yeah, don't forget the physical yesterday (I'm perfectly healthy, thank you very much). Aside from the regular doctor at the clinic, there was a very nice girl from Germany who is studying medicine. So, I was examined twice! Ok, end of high school rant.

Do you plan to write more books like these? And I know that you said no more questions on the movie but will they make Inkspell a movie?

Insa: Whoops! I guess I should have been more thorough there! XD Narcissa is the reincarnation. Insa is Insa. ^_^ ;D Sorry about that.
Alex: Wherever you are... ^_^ XD I'm working on one major story right now, but I can't think of what to name it! xD It's about this girl who falls in love with a vampire-type man, and can't save her mom from falling off a bridge, so the man comes and she tells him she loves him.
Then she finds out that he's gonna mutate after not drinking for a long time and she goes to an evil witch for help. The witch turns her into a flesh-feeder/vampire thing... XD and fixes Valance and her daughter Insa, and they're both back to normal now.
This is about where I left off. ;D I know, crappy, but I can e-mail you the detailed version if you like. ;D
Sprotte: Yes, the twilight fans are VERRYY happy! ;D Although I don't like the whole Jacob/Renesmee deal. And what's with Rosalie? |

@ Ellen: Noooo! that's awful! but even six would be a lot I think. (my grandmother told me that she had a cat that had a litter of 2, then 3, then 4, then 5... different times of course) but still i hate to say this, but can you imagine the overpopulation if every single kitten survived? i know this is incredibly cruel, but if every kitten survived, and cats werent fixed... we'd have a problem... but i suppose it's less bad considering that you hadn't gotten much time to know them.... I wonder what has happened to the mother cat of Bandito though... she hasnt beena round for 2 days... which is abnormal... usualy i can't get rid of her!.... wait then again it was raining a lot lately... its too bad about the kittens though.
@ Cody: Good luck on your book by the way... (you sound as if you're just as far as I am in mine... almost done, but still not that close... anyway, hope you get it published soon. |

Beyond the Deepwoods, Edge Chronicles Book 1
by Paul Stewart.
An un-traditional coming-of-age story, the Edge Chronicles begins with Beyond the Deepwoods, in which our put-upon protagonist, Twig (a misplaced human boy who's being raised by woodtrolls) gets a hint of his true heritage, sheds his Deepwoods upbringing, and does the unthinkable: He strays from the path. Alone for the first time and surviving by his wits, Twig must surmount all manner of perils to pursue a destiny that is whisperingly, mysteriously promised to him "beyond the Deepwoods."

The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, Book 3)
by Philipp Pullman.
From the very start of its very first scene, The Amber Spyglass will set hearts fluttering and minds racing. All we`ll say here is that we immediately discover who captured Lyra at the end of The Subtle Knife, though we`ve yet to discern whether this individual`s intent is good, evil, or somewhere in between. We also learn that Will still possesses the blade that allows him to cut between worlds, and has been joined by two winged companions who are determined to escort him to Lord Asriel`s mountain redoubt.

 Skellig
by David Almond.
"I thought he was dead. He was sitting with his legs stretched out and his head tipped back against the wall. He was covered with dust and webs like everything else and his face was thin and pale. Dead bluebottles were scattered on his hair and shoulders. I shined the flashlight on his white face and his black suit."
This is Michael`s introduction to Skellig, the man-owl-angel who lies motionless behind the tea chests in the abandoned garage in back of the boy`s dilapidated new house. As disturbing as this discovery is, it is the least of Michael`s worries. The new house is a mess, his parents are distracted, and his brand-new baby sister is seriously ill. Still, he can`t get this mysterious creature out of his mind--even as he wonders if he has really seen him at all.

 I Am The Messenger
by Markus Zusak
Ed is a 19-year-old loser only marginally connected to the world; he's the son that not even his mother loves. But his life begins to change after he acts heroically during a robbery. Perhaps it's the notoriety he receives that leads to his receiving playing cards in the mail. Ed instinctively understands that the scrawled words on the aces are clues to be followed, which lead him to people he will help (including some he'll have to hurt first). But as much as he changes those who come into his life, he changes himself more. Two particular elements will keep readers enthralled: the panoply of characters who stream in and out of the story, and the mystery of the person sending Ed on the life-altering missions. Concerning the former, Zusak succeeds brilliantly. Ed's voice is assured and unmistakeable, and other characters, although seen through Ed's eyes, are realistically and memorably evoked (readers will almost smell Ed's odoriferous dog when it ambles across the pages). As for the ending, however, Zusak is too clever by half. He offers too few nuts-and-bolts details before wrapping things up with an unexpected, somewhat unsatisfying recasting of the narrative. Happily, that doesn't diminish the life-affirming intricacies that come before.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, Book 1)
by Philip Pullman.
The hero of this complex fantasy is young Lyra Belacqua, an orphan growing up within the precincts of Oxford University. But it quickly becomes clear that Lyra`s Oxford is not precisely like our own--nor is her world. For one thing, people there each have a personal dæmon, the manifestation of their soul in animal form. For another, hers is a universe in which science, theology, and magic are closely allied.
